During social we continued with our Alberta's regions research project.   It is expected to be done this Friday!

In LA we completed our dead words lists and more alive words to use for them.  The other half we played a figurative language game by reading random examples and identifying  what term(s) that example contains.

In the afternoon we practiced creating examples of the new spelling list words, silent reading, gym and musics,  while our class was at music Mrs. Tam had her class class think pair share with think, pair and share their

Today in class we continued to learn more about patterns and real world application of them through word problems and multiple choice problems.

In social science we finalized the mark rubric for our project, it will be posted after this blog.  The class only has 4 social studies left to finish, practice, and polish their 'Region of Alberta' project.

During LA, we finished review the narrative elements we've learned throughout the unit to prepare for the early stages of the writing process.  As well, we had a group discussion about boring words, such as nice.  The class made their own list as to what words are useless, no detail, and just are plain boring.  The lifeless words were transferred to a larger paper and students worked in groups to create better words for them and how to show them through figurative language, like a simile.  With a timer and in groups, the class was set to a boring word station and attempted to add vivid detail to it.  The class rotated to all the stations; this will help them when drafting their stories to avoid mistakes and focus on new details, which keep the reader engaged.

In the afternoon, students were given back their maths tests to review and look over.   They had to fill out the green paper and create a goal they can achieve.  As well, we blogged about am image, and discussed how to bring a picture to life through words.

Overall, it was a great day for all learners!

We hope you have a terrific Tuesday!!

Today we learned how to utilize our new playground games that have been installed in on the playground in the morning as our gym period.

In science we really dove into our leaf project! It was great to see all the hard work by students. Continue collecting and pressing leaves at home.  Remember, we want different kinds of leaves.

During LA we practiced our descriptive skills using figurative language.  Each pair was given an object to describe to the class without saying its name; using the shape, size, colour, texture, smell, etc to give hints about your object.  The class then had to present their descriptions and guess the object.

In math we continued our understanding of patterns but looking at exam type questions, and forming different rules as a class before heading to reading buddies.

After that, we worked on our multiple intelligence project / any missed work.

We hope everyone has a thrifty Thursday!

Social:
  • Today was a work period for the Regions of Canada.  Many students used their time wisely and now have a great start to their research.  As a class we discussed how important it was not to copy information from the internet word for word.  That is called plagiarism.
Language Arts:
  • We continued to look at how to write better main events (rising actions, climax) in stories.  Two common mistakes students tend to make include:
    • summarize the event rather than STRETCHING IT OUT
    • list action after action and linking it with "and then"
  • Our main events should have a good balance between:
    • description
    • action
    • dialogue
    • thoughts/feelings
    • sound effects

  6. Spelling Test Friday after assembly
Today we were introduced to our new Patterns and Equations unit in math.  We explored what Palindromes are, and how to recognize basic increasing patterns using addition and multiplication.  Palindrome is a word or phrase or number that is the same backwards and frontwards I.E. kayak, 3663. We will be exploring patterns first through input/output, listing the pattern and the relationship between the input and output numbers.

In science we continued our Forest and Trees unit by exploring the topic of ecosystems.  We started to examine what makes up an ecosystem and how each variable in the system depends on another. Thus, if we remove a key aspect of an ecosystem it could have disastrous consequences for the system.

In LA we have been working on exciting introductions to short stories.  We have been practicing various introductions using dialogue, thoughts, actions and sounds.

In the afternoon we had DEAR time, gym, pictures, free writing and sharing, and music.

In health we continued our exploration of multiple intelligences and learning more about how we learn.

We hope everyone has a tubular Tuesday!

In the morning today we worked on our social project: Regions of Alberta before the evacuation.

The students were excellent during the emergency evacuation practice to another school.

After we had time to work on our health project when they returned.

During LA we focused on peer assessment and editing our rough copies before beginning final copies of the setting riddle.  Student had to have their work peer-edited, then make the changes, then edited again, make any further changes, and edited one final time before starting their final copy.

In the afternoon we started our genius hour.  Students had to create a 16-day plan involving research, creation, and presentation, and peer assessing.  They also had to come up with the topic they're going to research that they're curious or passionate about.  We had a few technological hiccups with the wi-fi so today will not count as one of their 16-days.

We hope everyone has a fabulous Friday, and GO BLUE JAYS GO!

4. Setting good copy paragraph Tuesday, Oct 18th
5. Fire evacuation drill tomorrow 9am!

It was nice to be back on schedule on back to our "normal" routine, if you can say that :)

In math class, we had the whole hour to complete, and double check our math tests before handing them in.  Students who finished early were able to work on their health silhouette project.   As a teacher, I learned more about test planning and how long it takes students to complete work under pressure. Next time, a test hopefully will only take 1 period, it was an excellent learning experience.

In social, we started a new research project that builds off our knowledge of maps and mapping and extends to a region of Alberta.  We will post the checklist for the slideshow as well as the mark rubric when its created.  The mark rubric will be created with the class after they have been given a couple lessons to work on their project so they're more familiar with the work.  Basically, they have to research a region of Alberta, and present geographical information to the class.  We will be creating a quiz based off all the information presented to the class.  During groups' presentations,  the students will grow their note-taking skills and write down the information they deem important.

In language arts, we continued our work with the writing process and took our brainstorms to drafts. We had to create a paragraph based on a previous conflict and make the setting of the conflict come to life using figurative language.  The good copy will be due Tuesday, October 18th.

In the afternoon we had DEAR time, gym, then reading buddies, which is always a pleasure watching the grade 6s make reading come alive with the grade 2 students.

Finally, while one class had music the other continued to work on their health project.

We hope everyone has a Taco Thursday!

In LA today we dove deeper into our understanding of setting, figurative language, and the writing process.  We had to plan out a literal setting we are going to use in our narrative, one from the conflicts we wrote a previous lesson, and begin the writing process of brainstorming with the soul focus of creating a brilliant setting filled with figurative language and literary devices.  We are still in the planning phase.

In math we had our foundational skills test.  It will continue tomorrow, students who finished can continue their health projects.

Tomorrow we will back to normal after our final day swimming!

We hope everyone has a wacky Wednesday!

In math we used the period to review for our test tomorrow.  The students broke into groups and were given the task to create a review poster for their topic.  The posters will be hung up for tomorrow's test to be used as helpful reminders when needed.

Afterwards we continued with our multiple intelligence silhouette for health while the other half went to music.

We hope everyone has a terrific Tuesday!
