Mini Science Research Project

Sky Science - Research Information Sheet

Over your break you are encouraged to learn about a topic that is interesting to you but not necessarily in the curriculum.

You are welcome to work alone or with someone (max 3).

You will need to stick to this criteria:

1. Explain WHAT it is you are researching
2. Explain WHY it is important to share this information (maybe to you, maybe to society generally – this is more important)
3. Point out 2-3 interesting facts
4. You ONLY have 3-4 minutes to share with the class - SO practice and be succinct.

Yes this is part of your report card, everything is! =) It demonstrates your learning of science concepts, your ability to inquire, present, and learn outside of school independently.

Ways to present:
Think of those multiple intelligences….
-visually (slides)
-interesting speech with pictures

If you are collaborating with someone, it is suggested to use Google Docs or Slides so you can work on it together from your own home.

Please have this done for the first day after the break. We will begin our presentations on April 3 and do a few a day until we are done. Have fun learning!

Wednesday, March 22nd

Reminders
1. No school Thursday / Friday
2. Parent teacher interviews are student involved - meaning your child is expected to show you their learning and progress this year --- don't forget to sign up online please.

Today we had 'Our Business World' presentation, where students learned about running business, becoming an entrepreneur, how profit works, how to keep customers, and the list goes on.  We've sent home the work package they had to complete and learn about.  It was a very fascinating presentations and both classes were actively engaged throughout the entire morning!

In the afternoon we cleaned the class, our desks, handed back marks, went over marks, and made sure each student is ready to go with a fresh 'spring' start after the break!

The only homework besides helping out at home, doing dishing, cleaning, making breakfasts/lunches/dinners ;)  is their sky science project.  A paper was sent home yesterday to explain it.  Presentations begin the first day back (April 3rd).

We hope to see you all tonight and tomorrow to catch up :)

Today in class we practiced some decimal arithmetic (multiplication, addition, subtraction, division) before we moved onto to volume!  The students really started understanding the rules of decimal work.

In social we finished explored the federal government: sovereign, house of commons and the senate.  We also learned how laws start and become passed or abolished.

During LA we learned about the cinquain poem.  We learned about the rules, format and some literary devices.

In the afternoon we explored our new science project due April 3rd.

We hope everyone has a terrific Tuesday!

Monday, March 20th

WOW!

What a great presentation today from Mr. James D. The students were so enthralled with the planetarium visit and it was such a great show in the Learning Commons! Ask your child why we have seasons. It has something to do with 23 degrees!! Your child should be able to communicate this to you.

Measuring the area and perimeter is proving to be challenging for some so this work will continue. However, Tuesday we will be building on these concepts and talking about volume.

In Language Arts, students learned about Diamonte poems. A quick review with you as parents regarding nouns, adjectives, and verbs might help bring in some interesting vocabulary to these poems. For homework, there are 2 poems due for Tuesday.

Reminder that school clothing orders are due Wednesday, March 22. Parent Council will have a booth set up at conferences.

Happy Monday to all!

In science today we explored interesting facts about the Earth and its relationship to our solar system, the sun, and space itself; very cool stuff!

During LA we completed our group Haiku's on the 4 seasons, and presented them to the class.  For the most part each presentation is better than the next, and the students are learning how to work more effectively in a group setting.

In the afternoon, as always, our grade 6s were excellent reading with and listening to their reading buddies.  Its always a joy to see them to motivated to helping younger students read.

We hope everyone has a Thermal Thursday!

Wednesday, March 15th

Good evening all,

Today was a fairly intense math day.
Students needed a lot of review on multiplication of multi-digit numbers. After working with the area and perimeter of rectangles and other polygons, we soon realized that there was a lot of review work on multiplication that was required in order to put this other work into context.

Below are the 3 review videos:

https://www.mathantics.com/section/lesson-video/multi-digit-multiplication-pt1
https://www.mathantics.com/section/lesson-video/multi-digit-multiplication-pt2
https://www.mathantics.com/section/lesson-video/decimal-arithmetic

As well, there is extra math support offered at lunch hour and recess (when Mrs. Harris and Mr. Shackleton aren't on supervision - just make sure you tell your lunch supervisor).

Social Studies was also pretty heavy with discussion revolving around the federal government and how it compares to provincial and municipal.

We then completed the morning off on a lighter note with all students writing out their best Haiku poems for a group poster.

For this Friday:
There is a spelling test
A math quiz on area and perimeter (using multi-digit numbers with decimals)
Hand in Jump Rope for Heart money and forms
An assembly at 8:15 am
Early dismissal at 11:00 am
Book orders due

Upcoming:
SURPRISE!! Interesting planetarium visit on Monday in the Learning Commons

Today in class we continued exploring area and perimeter! The classes seem to have forgotten how to multiply decimals and 2x2 digits, which was a disappointment.  Practice makes perfect in math!

In sky science today we explored we already knew about space and came up with questions we wanted to dive deeper into.

During LA today we explored the metaphor and Haiku poetry.  Tomorrow we will be listening to some students' creations!

After reading and gym, the class continued to learn more about ourselves during health.

We hope everyone has a tasteful Tuesday!

Today in class we had a guest speaker about financial money and how to spot adds that are just trying to get us to spend more; it was a very useful presentation!

In social we put on our law maker caps and created some new municipal by laws for Calgary, provincial acts for Alberta, and laws for Canada.  Once in groups we picked some of our favorites to use for our made up countries, provinces, and cities.

We also continued to explore the role and impact provincial government has on municipalities and their relationship with the federal government.

During LA we started a new unit: poetry!  We explored what is poetry, and how it is similar and different than prose writing.  We read some poems and quotes from famous others about what poetry is, and learned the rules of reading poetry.  Tomorrow we will be diving into our first type of poem. a haiku.

In the afternoon we had new spelling words (LA and social) and worked on discovering their definitions before we could use them in a sentence.

We hope everyone has a magical Monday!

In social studies we explored how to pass a bylaw and provincial act, as well as the chain of power in a municipality and province.

During LA we had our genius hour project.  Today was day 8/16.  We are half way through, so students should be done their research and are starting to build their presentation.

In the afternoon, we read, played hockey in gym, had spelling test #11 (marked by peers), and cleaned up the classroom for our guest speaker Monday morning.

We wish everyone a safe and happy weekend, and of course, a fabulous Friday!

In social studies today we started to learn about the provincial government process and how a bylaw comes into pass in the municipal government.

During LA groups completed their newscast presentations!  For the most part, they were excellent!
