Tuesday, April 25th

Today we discovered more about ancient Athens.  Students had to write a narrative about being a citizen who is apart of the Boule and what their day would be like during a Boule meeting, and citizen assembly at Pnyx hill.  The other class caught up on important PAT notes about ancient Athens before being introduced to the narrative assignment about being a Boule member.

After exploring planets, moons, and solar systems, the classes dove into the first full-hour allotted for their poetry anthology.  The classes will be given sometime Friday and maybe Thursday for this project depending how the math night projects' pace.

We hope everyone has a tubular Tuesday!

Thursday, April 20th

Happy Thursday!

Reminder, there is early dismissal tomorrow after our Pillars of Care Assembly which is at 8:15am.

Today was a bit of a different day. We began the day by working on our Sky Science watercolor art pieces. The art is looking fabulous so please be sure to check them out in the classroom when you visit us next Thursday for Math night!

That's right! Thursday night is the school's math night to showcase the work all students did with resident artist Jen Stables. There will be more information coming out on this as soon as the details are ironed out. Some of our Marvelous Mavericks have volunteered for this evening to sell popcorn so ask your child about this.

Following science / art, the grade 6 students all looked into ancient Athenian society and learned about their scientific and mathematical contributions to Western society.

The afternoon consisted of some down time reading, physical fitness in the gym, science presentations as well as music/band for all!

There is no official homework tonight, but students are more than welcome to come prepared to begin their Poetry Anthologies or continue with their Genius Hour work. Depending on the flow of the day tomorrow, one of those two things will be tackled tomorrow.

Poetry Anthology project and rubric

Poetry Anthology
Poetry is a difficult thing to assess as it has so much meaning behind it. Assessment, however, is required for this unit. In an effort to make it fair and accessible for all students, assessment will largely be based on an observational approach and a formal rubric. Students are required to participate in all activities or to make up work. The completion of the poetry journey in class is essential. Students must submit all the poems requested. A checklist will accompany the journal so each student knows what is required of them (look at your class notes!). The journals will be given a mark based on completion; there will be a minimum of 2 in-class work periods to catch up and edit poems.
Meaning in “Performance Standards”/Ideas in “Traits of Writing.”
The writing/representation:
– makes sense and develops clear, focussed ideas which may be imaginative and original
– narrows and focuses a topic
– includes well-developed paragraphs with sensory detail that creates meaning for the reader; poetry uses sensory detail and follows the pattern provided
– may include pictures that enhance the main ideas but are not necessary for comprehension
Style in “Performance Standards”/Sentence Fluency, Word Choice and Voice in “Traits of Writing.”
The writing/representation:
– includes a deliberate choice of word order within a sentence or line of poetry, for effect
– emulates elements of style from literature, visuals, or from a poetic form
– experiments with new and different words with some success and uses some words for specificity (e.g., content words, powerful verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
– shows a clear sense of audience; engages the reader and creates an emotional impact
– uses literary devices (e.g., similes, metaphors, alliteration)
– demonstrates some sense of individuality
Form in “Performance Standards”/Organization in “Traits of Writing.”
The writing/representation:
– uses genre or form appropriate to purpose and audience
– uses text structures appropriate to form or genre
– develops a complete plot, with characters, settings, problems, events, and resolutions
– uses an extended range of connecting words to combine ideas strategically, and to indicate comparisons, sequence, and describe cause and effect relationships
– reads smoothly
– includes a thoughtful and expressive title

9 Poems expected to be in anthology: acrostic, haiku, biopoem, tercet, cinquain, diamanté, ode, ballad, concrete–must be a new poem for concrete.  Improve on your first drafts, have a peer/parent/sibling edit them

-Make a title page, table of contents, a dedication page

Extras
If possible, have an overall theme for the entire anthology! Yes you can submit more than one type of poem if you wish.
HAVE FUN!

Today in math class we practiced volume questions before moving onto angle and triangle work.  We were labeling angles, triangles, and measuring them to prove why.

In social we continued to explore ancient Athens by exploring the assembly, council of 500, and the court system.

In science we continued our study of space and the sky above us.

During LA, we took up last night's homework by sharing poems with the class before introducing our poetry anthology project that will be posted to the blog after this posting.

In the afternoon the students received their awards for gym olympics and were excellent during the surprise lockdown!!

We hope everyone has a wacky Wednesday!

Tuesday, April 18th

Good day all!
Hope you all had a good break.
It is early dismissal this Friday as well as a Pillars of Care Assembly at 8:15 a.m.

LA.
Students were introduced to Tercet poems today. The rhyme scheme goes:

A
A
A
B
B
B
C
C
C         Where the C section (the ending) forces the reader to revisit the poem and what was written before in AAA and BBB.

Math
Today we continued work on Angles. Defining angles was the tricky part, but students really do show that that know a lot of characteristics about angles. This work will continue and be applied in a problem-solving context throughout the next couple of weeks.

Green sheets were sent home for signing from the quiz last Thursday.

Science
Room 14 finished off the majority of their sky science centers and many students began their watercolor sky science projects to demonstrate their understanding in another way.

Social
Students are still working on understanding democracy in ancient Athens and how that society looked at that time in in history. Ask your child what some of the major differences are between ancient Athenian democracy and our current day democracy in Canada.

Reminder
Tercet Poem due tomorrow
Special Lunch order forms due April 26
