LA: PART A Mock exam - news article

Functional Writing:  (Suggested Time – (40 minutes)
Read the situation below and complete the assignment that follows.
The Situation
Pretend that your name is Kelly Brown and you are a student at Dino Elementary School.  You are also a reporter for your school newspaper.  Your class received the following invitation to attend a charity event.  You and your parents decide to visit the event and you will report back to your classmates.

To an event sponsored by the Dino Elementary School to raise funds for their Students’ Union.
Dino School’s Got Talent

Students from Dino Elementary will share their talents with the school and community, in hopes of raising money for the students of their school.  All proceeds will go directly to the students of the school.



 









Entry into this event is $2 per person or $5 per family.  Donations to the local food bank will give you an entry into the door prize draw.

Assignment


Write a news article for your school newspaper that will inform your classmates (the readers about Dino School’s Got Talent) and tell about what you learned while you were there.

Where and When was the event?

Why did the event happen?
·       To raise money for Dino Elementary Students’ Union. 
·       To bring community and school together.

Who was involved?
·      Dino Elementary Students
·      Parents, teachers, community members and students making up the audience.

Purpose of the talent show?
·      To raise money for the Students’ Union.
·      Money will be used to plan a school wide field trip for grade k – 8 students.
·      Food bank donations will be collected to benefit the forgotten lunch program.
·      Bridge community and school in a fun, meaningful way.
Interesting Facts
·       All students in grade K – 8 were eligible to enter.
·       18 acts
·       Children created and practiced on their own time.
·       Some acts included: singing, guitar playing, air-bands, lightshows and dancing.
·       Participants ranged from individual performances to small groups to whole classes.
·       All participants received a package of starbursts
·       The winners received a bundle of helium balloons to proudly display in their classroom.
Door Prizes
·       Entry for anyone who brought a food bank donation
·       Winner, James Allison, won the family movie package.
Donations/ Money Raised
·       SU raised $300.
·       They intend on taking the entire school bowling and to a movie, in May.
·       The collection of food bank items, stocked the shelves for the forgotten lunch program.
