As a part of the Canadian
Charter of Rights and Freedoms we have a right to:

Fundamental
Freedomsàexpress (state) your opinions

Freedomsàjoin (belong) to any group

Democratic
rightsà Parliament
needs to have a meeting at
least one time per year

Mobility
Rightsà As a Canadian citizen, you have the right to
stay, leave or enter Canada as you wish as long as you do not have a criminal
record

Minority
Language Education Rightsà as
Canadian citizens, we have a right to receive schooling in both English and French
o
Legal
Rightsà you have the right to a fair trial and are assumed
to be innocent until proven guilty
o
Fundamental
Freedomsà right to practice whatever religion you choose (wish to practice)

Charter
can only be amended by the governmentà people vote against or for changes and then a
decision is made
o
Charter
falls underneath our constitution

Representative Democracy:

Where
citizens elect people to represent them (elected officials)
Collective Rights:
o
Rights
that help to protect a certain group (Aboriginal people, Francophones,
Anglophones)
Mobility Rights:

Canadian citizens (permanent residents) have the
right to enter, stay or leave Canada as they wishà these rights can be taken
away if you are convicted of a crime

Move to another province and can earn a living
in any province
Legal Rights:
·
To feel free and safe
·
To have a fair and quick public trial
·
In a trial to be assumed innocent until proven
guilty
Official Languages of
Canada Rights:

Right to communicate with and receive services
from the federal government in French and English
Minority Language
Education Rights:

To have publicly funded schools for Francophones
in provinces where most people speak English and for Anglophones in
provinces (Quebec) where most people speak French
General Rights:

To uphold existing Aboriginal and treaty
rights
·
To uphold the multicultural heritage of
Canadians
Enforcement Rights:
·
Right to go to court if any of your other
rights are deniedà
often times will go to the Supreme Court of Canada
